Enahoro At Gowon's Wedding

Chief Anthony Enahoro and Madame Helen Enahoro at Gowon’s Wedding, in 1969.
On 19 April 1969, Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro and his wife, Madame Helen Enahoro, attended the wedding of Major General Yakubu Gowon at Christ Church Cathedral, Marina, Lagos.
This moment was significant, just three years after Enahoro’s release from prison — marking the public reemergence of one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists and pro-democracy advocates.
Enahoro, alongside Chief Obafemi Awolowo and 17 others, had been accused in 1962 of plotting to overthrow the government. Convicted in 1963 and sentenced to 15 years in prison, he regained his freedom in 1966 following Nigeria’s turbulent political shifts.
This photograph captures more than a social event; it reflects resilience, political survival, and the enduring presence of a man who shaped Nigeria’s independence movement.
It also highlights the close interplay between politics and society during a volatile era in Nigeria’s history.
